Established in 1959 to protect the Gunpowder River and the Big and Little Gunpowder Falls, Gunpowder Falls State Park is now one of Maryland’s largest state parks. Covering over 18,000 acres in Harford and Baltimore Counties, Gunpowder’s narrow corridors host a varied topography, ranging from tidal wetlands to steep and rugged slopes. Gunpowder features more than 120 miles of multi-use trails, protected state wildlands, historic sites, fishing, kayaking, canoeing and a swimming beach and marina.

Driving Directions:
Central Area (Belair Road) – From the Baltimore Beltway (I-695), take U. S. 1 (Belair Road) north seven miles until you cross over the Big Gunpowder Falls. The parking lot will be on your right immediately following the bridge across the falls.

Dundee Creek Marina - From I-95 take exit 67A for Route 43 east (White Marsh Boulevard). Follow 43 to Route 40 east. Turn right at the first light onto Ebenezer Road and follow it for 4.5 miles. Go past the Hammerman entrance, and enter the marina on the right. The physical address is 7400 Graces Quarters, Middle River, MD 21220. To visit the fishing area, continue straight and veer to the right and follow the road until it deadends.

Hammerman Area (beach) - From I-95 take exit 67A for Route 43 east (White Marsh Boulevard). Follow 43 to Route 40 east. Turn right at the first light onto Ebenezer Road and follow it for 4.5 miles. The park entrance will be on your left. The physical address is 7200 Graces Quarters, Middle River, MD 21220.

Hereford Area - The Hereford Area is a noncontiguous area with many access points to multiple trail heads. From I-83 N, take exit 27 and turn left on Mt. Carmel Road and then a right on Masemore Road. Alternatively, take a right off exit 27 and at traffic light, turn left onto York Road. Pass Hereford High School and turn left onto Bunker Hill Road. Continue on Bunker Hill Road to parking lot, located above the river. Refer to trail map for more specific locations.

Jerusalem Mill (Park Headquarters) - From I-95 take exit 74 for Route 152 West (Mountain Road). Follow Mountain Road toward Fallston and turn left onto Jerusalem Road. Jerusalem Mill will be on your left after 1.1 miles. Parking is in the lot on the right, just before the mill. The physical address is 2813 Jerusalem Road, Kingsville, MD 21087.

Monkton Station - From I-83 N, take exit 27 and turn right on Mt. Carmel Road. Turn right on York Road and make a quick left onto Monkton Road. Follow it until it crosses the Torrey C. Brown (formerly NCR) Rail Trail. Monkton Station will be on your left. Limited parking. The physical address is 1820 Monkton Road, Monkton, MD 21111.

Sweet Air Area – Take I-95 north. Take exit 74 onto Route 152 toward Fallston. Follow it for 10 miles. Turn left onto Route 165 south. Take first right onto Greene Road, right onto Moores Road and left onto Dalton Bevard Road. The parking lot is at the top of the hill. The physical address is 2840 Dalton Bevard Road, Baldwin, MD 21013.

Sparks Bank Nature Center - From I-83N take exit 24 (Belfast Road). Turn right onto Belfast Road. Turn right onto York Road (Route 45). Take your second left onto Sparks Road. Follow it until it crosses the Torrey C. Brown (formerly NCR) Rail Trail. Sparks Bank Nature Center will be on your right. Limited parking. The physical address is 1207 Sparks Road, Sparks, MD 21152.

Hours of Operation:
Hours vary dependent on location.

Certain activities are permitted outside of the regular park hours (e.g. fishing, boat launch, hunting where permitted). Please check with the park before your visit if you plan to engage in an activity which requires you to be in the park before or after the posted hours.

Hunting Policy:

Waterfowl blind sites available by lottery (free WHS permit/reservation required for some sites) offshore the Hammerman and Days Cove areas - Managed Hunt Permit required
Archery-only hunting for deer permitted in designated hunting areas of the Hereford area with permit and daily sign-in required - Reservations required September - November - Managed Hunt Permit required

Pet Policy:
Pets are allowed in Gunpowder Falls State Park in the following areas as long as they are leashed and curbed:

Pets are allowed in all undeveloped areas.
Pets are allowed in Dundee Creek Marina area.
Pets are allowed in Hammerman area (except for sandy portion of swimming beach area from Memorial Day Weekend until after Labor Day).

20 miles of trail - not all trails are appropriate for horseback riding. It is recommended to hike trails prior to riding them. Most popular trails with equestrians include Panther Branch, Mingo Forks, and Bunker Hill.

North Point State Park

Service charges are in effect. Weekends and holidays, Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day: $4/vehicle ($6/vehicle for non-Maryland residents). Weekdays (Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day) and off-season (after Labor Day to the Friday before Memorial Day weekend): $3/vehicle ($5/vehicle for non-Maryland residents). Golden Age Pass holders, Annual Pass holders, active duty military, and veterans enter free.

Gunpowder Falls State Park - Graham Equestrian Center

The Graham Equestrian Center (GEC) is located in Gunpowder Falls State Park. The GEC is a non-profit equine organization that provides an equestrian component to the park’s objective of nature tourism, and to that end, GEC promotes and offers educational opportunities to the citizens of Maryland. As a certified Horse Discovery Center by the Maryland Horse Industry Board, GEC provides a way for the community to interact with horses and learn about them in a safe and educational setting.

Graham Equestrian Center does not offer guided trail rides or horse rentals to the public.

Boarding
The Graham Equestrian Center is a full care boarding facility conveniently situated only two miles north of the Baltimore Beltway on Harford Road. GEC has 22 acres of board-fenced pasture utilizing USDA approved pasture management and rotational grazing practices. Every pasture has access to large run-in sheds. The horses are kept in roomy stalls during inclement weather and are blanketed per the owners request during the winter. Worming and a customized feed plan are included in the cost of boarding. Trailer parking is available.

The facility has a lighted 100' x 200' outdoor arena, a 60' round pen and direct access to the trails of Gunpowder Falls State Park. Boarders at GEC also enjoy the wealth of events that GEC hosts year round.

Year-long Events and Classes
Lessons: The guiding principle of GEC is to become a premier equine educational facility in the state of Maryland.

Clinics and Classes: GEC offers a variety of clinics and classes throughout the year – please refer to the website for the most up-to-date information. Most clinics offer an audit option.

Graham Equestrian Center also offers events such as:

Enjoy the Park
The GEC area of Gunpowder Falls State Park is a great place to enjoy hiking the trails, walking your dog or bird-watching. The open space around GEC is open to the public from sunrise to sunset. Please note that dogs must be kept on a leash at all times. Also please keep in mind that many horses are skittish - particular dislikes include baby strollers, umbrellas, bicycles and plastic bags. While you are welcome to enjoy the open space around our property, please keep this in mind and be aware of your surroundings in order to avoid scaring the horses. Visitors are not allowed to enter the fields or any fenced area.

Trailering In
Visitors are welcome to trailer their own horses in to ride the trails. For security purposes, please contact the Graham Equestrian Center ahead of time if you plan to bring your horses to the property. For bio-security reasons, outside horses are not allowed in the barn, riding arenas, fields or to interact with horses boarded onsite.

With over 18,000 acres and 120 miles of trails, Gunpowder can certainly use your volunteer assistance. If you are interested in any of the opportunities listed below, please contact Gunpowder Falls State Park headquarters at 410-592-2897, or email gunpowderfalls.statepark@maryland.gov

Individuals and groups (schools, clubs, etc.) are encouraged to participate.

Cleanups

Help make a visible difference in the park! We always have cleanup opportunities. Park staff will lead guided cleanups and provide gloves, pickers and bags. For more information, contact park headquarters at 410-592-2897 or by email.

Gardening

Gunpowder Falls State Park has several volunteer groups whose primary interest is maintaining the gardens throughout the park. If this is something you would like to do, contact park headquarters at 410-592-2897 or by email.

Living History and Historic Building Preservation

The Friends of Jerusalem Mill (FOJM) is an organized group of volunteers dedicated to restoring, preserving and interpreting the 18th and 19th century Jerusalem Mill Village. FOJM always welcomes new members and volunteers. If you are interested in living history programs or renovating historic structures, this may be a group for you. Maintenance

Do you like to work outside and get your hands dirty? If you are a handyman or woman, volunteer maintenance may be the right fit for you. For more information, contact park headquarters at 410-592-2897 or by email.

Naturalist and Special Programs

We are always looking for qualified people who may be interested in assisting with special programs such as campfires, nature hikes or even arts and crafts. We offer a variety of programs for all seasons. For the safety of our young visitors, all volunteer naturalist candidates are carefully screened and require background checks.

Trail Work

With over 120 miles of trails, trail work is a year-round endeavor. We offer training and guidance in the principles of sustainable trail design for all of our trail volunteers. Due to the sensitive nature of trail work, it is important to work closely with park staff. Please contact gunpowderfalls.statepark@maryland.gov if trail work interests you.

Have interest and enthusiasm for the outdoors and for maintaining the park for the public
Display a pleasant attitude and interact well with others
Be able to follow instruction and use safety precautions

Hunting at Gunpowder Falls

Archery Hunting for Deer

Hereford Area
There are two areas in the Hereford zone that are open to archery hunting for whitetail deer. The Free Public Hunting permit and sign-in required. These areas are within the CWD containment Zone. All regulations apply.

Area A is open from the first day of Archery Season until the last day of the primitive season. Monday – Saturday. 25 hunters per day. Approximately 1000 acres.

Area B is open from October 17, 2024, through the last day of primitive season. Thursday – Saturday only. 25 hunters per day. Approximately 400 acres

Jarrettsville Pike/ Loch Raven Archery Deer hunting Area – New this year
The Jarrettsville Pike hunting area consists of 225 acres and is adjacent to the Loch Raven CWMA. The Free Public Hunting permit required. Hunters may park in the designated parking area shown on the map or in designated parking areas for the Loch Raven CWMA. Hunting is permitted during all deer seasons, Monday – Saturday. Archery hunting for deer only. This area falls within the CWD containment zone. All regulations apply.

Franklinville Archery Deer Hunting Area – New this year
The Franklinville hunting area consists of 200 acres. The Free Public Hunting Permit and a reservation are required. Archery hunting for deer only. Five hunters per day. Parking in designated location only. The Baltimore County Portion of the property is located in the CWD Containment zone. All regulations apply.

Sweet Air Archery Deer Hunting Area – New this year
The Sweet Air Hunting area is approximately 600 acres and has two designated parking areas. The Free Public Hunting Permit and a reservation are required. 20 hunters will be permitted per day. Archery hunting for deer only. Parking is only permitted in designated locations. The Baltimore County Portion of the property is located in the CWD Containment Zone. All regulations apply.

Dundee Creek Archery Deer Hunting Area – New this year
The Dundee Creek archery deer hunting area is approximately 170 acres. The area will be open to hunting Dec 1st through the end of primitive season. The Free Public Hunting Permit and a reservation are required. Five hunters will be allowed per day. This area is within the CWD containments zone. All regulations apply.

Permits and Regulations

The Free Public Hunting Permit is available on Compass, at the Gwynnbrook Wildlife Office, or through the mail.

Reservations are made through the Gwynnbrook Wildlife Office at 410-356-9272. Monday-Friday, 7:30am-11:30am
Hunters must park in the designated parking areas.
Hunters may enter the park no earlier than 1.5 hours before sunrise and must be out no later than 1.5 hours after sunset.
Hunters must contact Natural Resources Police at 410-260-8888 before tracking a wounded deer after hours, off State Park property, or outside of the designated hunting area.

Waterfowl Hunting

Days Cove
Eleven waterfowl sites are available for use along the Bird River and in the Days Cove area of Gunpowder Falls State Park. The Free Public Hunting Permit and a reservation are required. All sites must be accessed by water.

Dundee Creek and Cunninghill Cove
There are two sites in Dundee Creek (25&26) and two sites in Cunninghill cove (27&46) that offer waterfowl hunting. All of these sites will be open for waterfowl the third split and the veteran/youth hunt only and require the Free Public Hunting Permit and a reservation. The sites in Cunninghill Cove can only be accessed by water and hunting must conclude by 10 am. The two sites in Dundee Creek are accessible by land and offer all day hunting. Ask about access when making a reservation.

General Waterfowl Hunting Information:

A Free Public Lands Hunting Permit is required and may be obtained through COMPASS or anywhere Maryland hunting licenses are sold.

Reservations are made through the Gwynnbrook Wildlife Office at 410-356-9272.
The first Saturday of each duck split is drawn by lottery.

Hammerman Area

As Gunpowder’s premier day-use park, the Hammerman Area features a 1,500 foot beach and swimming area on the banks of the Gunpowder River. Food concessions, picnic pavilions and tables, playgrounds, canoe/kayak rentals, fishing and short hiking trails round out your park experience. Plus, the swimming beach, beach bathhouse and day-use pavilions are accessible for all.

Torrey C. Brown (TCB) Rail Trail State Park

The Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail follows 19.7 miles of the former the Northern Central Railway (NCR) in northern Baltimore County - from Ashland, Maryland north to the Maryland-Pennsylvania line, passing through historic communities including Ashland, Phoenix, Monkton, White Hall, Bentley Springs and Freeland. Hikers, joggers, bicyclists, horseback riders and pets on leashes are welcome. The Maryland Park Service does not rent horses and only provides the trails as a means of recreation. The Torrey C. Brown Trail is ADA accessible. For additional accessible amenities in Maryland State Parks, visit the Accessibility For All section of this website.

Class 1 Electric Bicycles - Class 1 electric bicycles are permitted on the Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail. They are regulated the same as all other bicycles, and are subject to all applicable bicycle rules and regulations regarding operation and safety equipment. Attention Tubers: Many sections of the Upper Gunpowder which are accessible from state park property flow through private property. Please be considerate of our neighbors and remain in the river until you reach a road crossing. Do your part to help keep the river clean and enjoyable for tubers and neighbors alike by not littering or trespassing on private property. Remember, Leave No Trace!

Sweet Air Area

With 1,250 acres, the Sweet Air Area is one of Gunpowder’s largest enclaves. Straddling the Little Gunpowder Falls, which makes up the border between Harford and Baltimore Counties, this area includes 18 miles of trails. Please be respectful to others and take your trash with you. Alcohol is not permitted.

Central Area

Bordering both the Big and Little Gunpowder Falls to their confluence at Days Cove, the Central Area features many miles of multi-use trails and opportunities for fishing as well as the historic milling village of Jerusalem Mill, which also serves as headquarters for Gunpowder Falls State Park.

Fishing Opportunities

The Big and Little Gunpowder Falls are both stocked with trout in put-and-take fishing areas. Anglers 16 years-of-age and older must possess a Maryland Non-Tidal Fishing License. For more information, visit the Maryland DNR Fisheries webpage.

Jerusalem Mill Village

Once the center of a thriving 18th- and 19th- century Quaker settlement, the Jerusalem gristmill operated continuously for nearly two centuries. Located on the banks of the Little Gunpowder Falls in Harford County, both the mill and village are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Jerusalem Mill was acquired by the state as part of Gunpowder Falls State Park in 1961 and now serves as the park headquarters and visitor center. The village’s buildings and grounds host a variety of regular and special living history events.

Hereford Area

Located in northern Baltimore County, the Hereford Area’s 3,620 acres feature a scenic wilderness setting preserved under state wildlands status for nature appreciation and outdoor adventures. Anglers will enjoy a nationally renowned special trout management area located downstream from Prettyboy Reservoir. Hikers and horseback riders can explore more than 20 miles of wooded trails. The Big Gunpowder Falls also attracts canoeing, kayaking and tubing enthusiasts throughout the year. Hereford’s Mill Pond Cottage provides overnight accommodations for up to eight people in a beautiful historic and natural setting.

Dundee Creek Marina

Located on Dundee Creek near the mouth of the Gunpowder River, the marina offers a number of amenities to the slip holders and the boating public, including gas sales, sewage pump out, boat accessories, bait, fishing tackle, ice, packaged foods, and gifts. Visitors should use caution in this area and stay on designated trails. Plus, the docks and marina store are Accessible to All.

North Point State Park

North Point is located in Baltimore County on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay and is rich in natural beauty. This 1,310 acre park in Edgemere was once the site of the Bay Shore Amusement Park, a popular destination for summer visitors from 1906 to 1947. Visitors can see the original trolley station, which is now used as a covered picnicking area, and fountain that has been restored and is still in operation today. The Defenders Trail, which was used by soldiers during the War of 1812, passes through the park. Today, North Point has scenic views overlooking the Chesapeake Bay, a water accessible area, two fishing piers, picnicking and hiking trails that lead you around the park and through protected wildlands. Come see how Mother Nature reclaimed the land where the amusement park once stood and the rich history North Point State Park has to offer.

Hart Miller Island State Park

Accessible only by personal boat

Hart-Miller Island is a 1,100-acre island located in Baltimore County on the Chesapeake Bay near the mouth of Middle River and is a must see for those who want to get away from it all. The island was originally part of a peninsula that extended from Edgemere, Maryland. The two islands, Hart and Miller, were joined by the construction of a dike in 1981, and until 2009, the impoundment was filled with dredge material from Baltimore Harbor, eventually creating Hart-Miller island. In recent years, Hart-Miller Island has become a haven for boaters in the northern Chesapeake Bay, providing the public opportunities to encounter many different species of plants, insects and wildlife along with other fun recreational activities.

The western shore of the island offers safe mooring, wading and access to a 3,000-foot sandy beach. Hart-Miller Island State Park also includes Hawk Cove and Pleasure Island, which also provide recreational opportunities and camping. The park is well-known for its abundant migrating bird populations.

Youth Group Camping

Camp Wood

Organized youth group camping with a permit is available at Camp Wood. Camp Wood is open May 1 through September 30. Click here for Youth Group Camping Permit Application and procedures.

The camp includes:

Tent sites under a mature forest
Fire rings
Grills
Comfort station
An amphitheater is available for programs.

Locating Camp Wood:
From I-83 N, take exit 27 and turn right onto Mt. Carmel Road. At the traffic light, turn left onto York Road. Pass Hereford High School and turn left onto Bunker Hill Road. Continue on Bunker Hill Road to the large asphalt parking lot.

Camp Cone

Locating Camp Cone:
From Harford Road (MD-147), turn onto Sharon Drive. When you reach Camp Cone Road, turn left. The park is located at the very end of Camp Cone Road.

Park Highlights

Central Area
Bordering both the Big and Little Gunpowder Falls to their confluence at Days Cove, the Central Area features many miles of multi-use trails and opportunities for fishing as well as the historic milling village of Jerusalem Mill, which also serves as headquarters for Gunpowder Falls State Park. Hikers, pets on leashes and horseback riders are welcome on all of the central area trails. Mountain bikes are welcome on many trails, but bicycles are prohibited in the Sweathouse Branch wildlands area along the Big Gunpowder Falls between Harford Road and Belair Road (U.S. 1). The Sweathouse Branch wildlands features several loop trails through hardwood forest along the banks of the Big Gunpowder Falls.

Torrey C. Brown (TCB) Rail Trail
The Torrey C. Brown Rail Trail extends from Ashland, MD north to the Maryland-Pennsylvania line, passing through the historic communities of Phoenix, Monkton, White Hall, Bentley Springs and Freeland. Hikers, joggers, bicyclists, horseback riders and pets on leashes are welcome. This abandoned railroad line traverses 19.7 miles through Northern Baltimore County. Visitors wishing to leave a vehicle in parking areas overnight for out of state travel should contact the park at (410) 592-2897 a minimum of two weeks in advance to obtain approval. Trail users are welcome to continue their journey north into Pennsylvania on the York County Heritage Rail Trail.
